Nissan Sentra Cup goes to Trois-Rivières for the first time!

NEWS - Sentra Cup Nissan
- The Canadian racing series will showcase the Sentras in action at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières for the first time -

After a year off due to the pandemic, the ever-popular Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières is back on the schedule for several Canadian motorsport series this year, including the Nissan Sentra Cup, which will make its debut on the treacherous street circuit this weekend. The Sentra Cup will race twice on the streets of Trois-Rivières with a race on Saturday and the second one on Sunday.

These races will be the fifth and sixth rounds of 12 for the Nissan Sentra Cup this season. The Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières (GP3R) will mark the end of the first half of the 2021 season, which has produced some very exciting racing so far. Nearly 30 competitors are expected to hit the track for this prestigious event, which will mark the first appearance of the new Nissan Sentra Cup car in Trois-Rivières.

From 2015 to 2019 (the GP3R was cancelled last year) the Nissan Micra Cup has captivated the fans who attended the event. The hard-fought, door-to-door battles that characterize the Nissan Sentra Cup will undoubtedly please the spectators this weekend. The modern and fast Nissan Sentra race cars, although almost standard except for safety equipment and accessories specific to motor racing, are expected to provide spectacular performances. The competitors will be out in action four times this weekend. They’ll enjoy a free practice session on Friday morning before they’ll battle for grid positions Saturday morning. They will compete in two 40-minute races held Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

A winner of prestigious events, such as the 24 Hours of Daytona, Jesse Lazare (Door Doctor/Motorsports In Action team), the winner of the two previous Sentra Cup races held at Circuit Mont-Tremblant at the end of July, will be looking to score his first career victory in Trois-Rivières. His main rivals for the title are young Ontarian Gavin Sanders (SPI Racing) - the two-time winner of the season-opening - and Gabriel Nissan teammates Kevin King and Valérie Limoges.

Sanders will have to quickly get to grips with the challenges of the track. Trois-Rivières resident and point standings’ leader Kevin King and his teammate Valérie Limoges, the winner of the 2019 Nissan Micra Cup (one of only two female drivers to have ever won an all-category GP3R race) know the track layout like the palm of their hands and are familiar with its many difficulties.

Drivers who will be on the hunt for the victory include Justin Di Benedetto and rookies Alexandre Fortin, Jesse Webb and Simon Charbonneau who are all ranked in the Top 8 in the overall standings. Senior category leader Éric Chaput will also be a threat as he is very familiar with the GP3R circuit. His rival for the Senior class title, British Columbia’s rookie Darren Graham, is new to the event.

In the Micra class, it will be interesting to follow the performances of series’ veterans Sylvain Ouellet and Frédéric Bernier against those of the young guns who are improving rapidly, like rookie Nicholas Hornbostel, the winner of two of the first four races. Popular comedian and humorist Michel Barrette will also compete in the two races this weekend in Trois-Rivières in the Micra class.

A limited number of spectators will be allowed in the grandstands for this edition of the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières. However, thanks to the series' social media, Nissan Sentra Cup fans from across Canada and beyond will have the chance to follow both races as if they were present on site. The Nissan Sentra Cup Facebook page will feature live coverage of both races, with commentary from trackside hosts. The series' social media channels will also post reports from the paddock throughout the weekend.

On display in the paddock of the GP3R all weekend long will be the famous Nissan LEAF Nismo RC, the 100% electric prototype. This LEAF Nismo RC will be one of the safety cars of the Nissan Sentra Cup.

The first race will start on Saturday, August 14, at 2 p.m. while the second race will get the green flag the following day, Sunday, August 15, at 11:50 a.m.
