Nissan Sentra Cup set to tackle ICAR Complex this weekend

NEWS - Sentra Cup Nissan
- The Canadian racing series will be in action on a fourth different racetrack in four events -

After an exciting first half of the season which saw Kevin King of team Gabriel Nissan / L&P Apparel capture the unofficial mid-season title, the Nissan Sentra Cup will hold its fourth event of the season on August 28 and 29. The Canadian motorsport series will stage two races at the ICAR Complex located on the grounds of the Montréal-Mirabel international airport this weekend.

The season began in Ontario at the Shannonville circuit before the series paid a visit to the Circuit Mont-Tremblant and the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières. The 3.42 km, concrete surface ICAR Complex represents the fourth Canadian track to hold a Nissan Sentra Cup race this season. The seventh and eighth rounds of 2021 will be part of a major motorsport meeting, open to spectators and showcasing NASCAR cars, prototypes and other series in addition to the Nissan Sentra Cup.

For a second time this season, spectators will have the chance to see the outstanding Nissan LEAF Nismo RC, the safety car of the series. The 100% electrically powered Nissan LEAF Nismo RC prototype will lead the grid of Nissan Sentras during their parade lap before the start of the two events on Saturday and Sunday.

Winners at the recent Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, Kevin King and Valérie Limoges, will undoubtedly be running near the front of the pack at ICAR. Both have scored one victory so far this year. Kevin King leads the point standings while Valérie Limoges, with her historic win less than two weeks ago in Trois-Rivières aboard her Gabriel Nissan / Total Quartz Sentra, has moved up to fourth in the overall driver standings.

The gap in points for the standings is very close at the halfway point of the season. Kevin King lies in first place but his archrival Jesse Lazare (Motorsports In Action / Door Doctor team) is second, just four points behind. Lazare, who has won two races so far this season, and who also won a race at ICAR last year, will want to take advantage of the opportunity to move ahead of King in the standings. However, King also won one race at the ICAR Complex last year on his journey to the Nissan Micra Cup title.

Top rookie driver so far this season, Alexandre Fortin sits at third in the point standings and will also be a force to be reckoned with, as will Ontarians Gavin Sanders, winner of the first two rounds of the season, and Justin Di Benedetto. British Columbia's Jesse Webb is fifth on the points’ ranking. Although he has never turned a wheel at the ICAR Complex, Webb has shown exceptional maturity since the beginning of the season.

No less than 26 drivers have entered this event. Among them, Quebecer Éric Chaput and British Columbian Darren Graham will resume their epic fight for the title in the Senior category. As usual, competition will be highly exciting in the Micra class. The experienced Sylvain Ouellet is first in the Micra class standings, but André Lapointe, remains in a strong position due to his two wins in Trois-Rivières, putting him in fourth place. Nicholas Hornbostel from Toronto and Frédéric Bernier from Québec City are in second and third, respectively.

The Nissan Sentra Cup drivers will race three times on Saturday; for a free practice session, a qualifying session and the first of two races, which will be 30 minutes long starting at 2:05 pm. On Sunday, they will race on the track three times again and the day will conclude with a 40-minute race, which will start at 2:00 pm.
