Rookies Alexandre Fortin and Jesse Webb are the winners of the Nissan Sentra Cup races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

NEWS - Sentra Cup Nissan
- This weekend’s two spectacular races are the prelude to an exciting fight for the 2021 title -

The Nissan Sentra Cup was back in Ontario this weekend for the ninth and tenth races of the season held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, just east of Toronto. This very fast and demanding road course has been the scene over the years of some of the most prestigious events in Canadian motorsport history. The spectators, admitted in limited numbers during this Labour Day Weekend Sprint, witnessed two highly spectacular races, won by two rookie drivers, Alexandre Fortin on Saturday and Jesse Webb on Sunday.

It was the first time that the Nissan Sentra Cup held an event at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, and it proved how well the new Nissan Sentra race cars performed on this fast 3.96 km track, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

In true summer-like weather, Jesse Lazare (Door Doctor / Motorsports In Action team) and Kevin King (Gabriel Nissan / L&P Apparel) resumed their fight for the title during the qualifying session held Saturday morning. Only eight thousandths of a second separated them at the end of the session, with Lazare taking pole position. This set the scene for an intense race.

Lazare and King were not the only candidates for the victory, as four drivers broke away from the rest of the field during the opening laps. The leading Lazare, King, Owen Clarke - last week's race winner at the ICAR Complex - and Gavin Sanders managed to pull away from the rest of the pack. However, Sanders was forced into a retirement, along with Clarke, leaving rookie Alexandre Fortin to compete for the victory with Lazare and King. With a stunning move, Fortin managed to snatch the lead from Lazare seconds before the race went under full-course yellow after Valérie Limoges went off the track.

Alexandre Fortin eventually won the race, scoring his first career win, ahead of Jesse Lazare, Jesse Webb and Darren Graham, who earned his first Top 5 finish and beat Éric Chaput for the Senior class victory.

Young Toronto driver Nicholas Hornbostel emerged the winner in the Micra category but only after a sensational fight with Nicolas Barrette. Barrette finished second, ahead of Sylvain Ouellet, André Lapointe and Mario Charrette.

Jesse Lazare emerged again fastest during Sunday’s qualifying session. During the opening laps of the race, he was put under tremendous pressure by Gavin Sanders, then by Kevin King and Jesse Webb. The duel between Lazare and King ended when young British Columbian driver Jesse Webb took advantage of their fight, passed them both and scored his first series win, 322 thousandths of a second ahead of Lazare.

With a car slightly damaged from contact with Lazare, King was passed by Justin Di Benedetto on the final lap, who took third place. Éric Chaput rounded out the top 5 finishers and won the Senior class over Darren Graham. The win allowed Chaput to secure the 2021 title in the Senior category.

The tenth event of the season in the Micra class was again dominated by Nicholas Hornbostel. Sylvain Ouellet and Nicolas Barrette completed the podium, ahead of André Lapointe and François Angers-Routhier.

With just two races to go, Kevin King remains on top of the overall drivers’ standings with 434 points, but Jesse Lazare made up ground in second place with 421 points. Now third in the standings, Jesse Webb (346 points) remains capable of taking the title, but his chances are slim. On the other hand, the victory in Sunday’s race allows him to jump in first place over Alexandre Fortin in the rookie category.

The next and final event will take place in three weeks at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, Québec as part of the traditional Fall Classic weekend. The overall Cup champion, as well as the winners in the Senior, Micra and Rookie categories, will be announced at the end of the day on Sunday September 26.
